How to Calculate How Much Paint You Need for Your Home Transformation
Planning to refresh your living space with a fresh coat of paint? The key to a flawless and stress-free decorating experience lies in knowing how much paint you’ll need for the job. While estimating paint quantity might seem daunting, this guide will break it down step by step. And remember, Oladecorator is here to simplify the process—so you can relax and enjoy the transformation.
Step 1: Measure Your Space
The first step is to determine the square metre measurement of the area you want to paint. Here’s how:
- Measure the maximum height and width of each wall.
- Multiply these two numbers together to get the total square metres of each wall.
Not great with a tape measure? Don’t worry! A quick and easy guideline is to “step it out.” One adult step equals approximately one metre. Start at one end of a wall, pace to the opposite end, and count your steps for a rough width or height measurement.
Step 2: Account for Windows and Doors
Your windows and doors take up space, and you don’t want to overestimate the amount of paint you’ll need.
- Measure the height and width of each window and door.
- Multiply these two numbers to calculate the area of each.
- Subtract the total window and door square metres from the overall square metre measurement of your walls.
This adjustment ensures that your paint quantity reflects only the actual surface area you’ll be covering.
Step 3: Determine the Number of Coats
The number of coats you’ll apply significantly impacts how much paint you’ll need. For a smooth, even finish and rich, vibrant colour, we recommend applying two coats for most interior paints.
To account for this in your calculation, simply multiply your total square metre measurement by two.
Step 4: Divide by Coverage per Litre
Each paint tin specifies how much area it covers per litre. For Oladecorator paints, the standard is 10m² per litre.
- Take your total square metre figure (including the two coats).
- Divide this number by 10 (or the specified coverage of your chosen paint).
This calculation gives you the exact amount of paint required in litres.
Step 5: Add a Little Extra for Touch-Ups
Accidents happen, and sometimes you’ll need to touch up small areas. To avoid running out of paint mid-project, add about 10% extra to your calculated paint quantity. This ensures you have enough for “just in case” scenarios.
