How to Fix an Electrical Box/Wall Chasing

An oversized drywall cutout around an electrical box can ruin the appearance of an otherwise perfect taping job. Let’s be honest, some electricians (sparkies) struggle with filling the wall properly, leaving plasterers and decorators to sort out the mess. But with the right technique and tools, you can achieve a polished, professional finish yourself.

PERMANENT REPAIR

If you’re handling your own drywall and electrical work, mistakes can happen—whether it’s a wrong measurement or getting carried away while cutting. But don’t worry, here’s a foolproof way to fix those oversized electrical box cutouts the right way.

Sure, you can cover the issue with jumbo electrical covers, but they look out of place next to properly sized boxes. Instead, follow this simple method to ensure your outlets look polished and neat.

Tools Required

  • Dust mask
  • Taping knife
  • Dust sheet, rag, or medium towel

Materials Required

  • One Coat Compound (British Gypsum)
  • Medium bowl for mixing
  • Lightweight joint compound (Easy Fill)
  • Medium (80) grit sandpaper or sanding sponge
  • Sponge

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Prepare the One Coat Compound
    • Take a minimal amount of One Coat Compound and mix it with a small amount of water.
    • Apply the mixture to the gap.
    • Why One Coat? It covers gaps 40–50mm deep without shrinking or cracking after it dries, unlike general fillers.
  2. Apply Lightweight Filler
    • After about an hour, apply the lightweight joint compound over the dried One Coat.
    • Don’t worry if the One Coat filling isn’t fully dry yet—it won’t interfere with the application of the lightweight filler.
  3. Sand the Surface
    • As the One Coat dries, you may notice a sandy texture. Use medium (80) grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge to smooth the area. Slightly dampening the sponge can make the sanding process easier and more effective.
  4. Repaint the Wall
    • Once the surface is smooth and even, repaint the repaired part of the wall for a seamless finish.

Pro Tip:

Always use dust sheets or rags to protect the surrounding area during the repair process. A clean workspace ensures a clean finish!

With this method, you’ll have your walls looking as good as new in no time. Say goodbye to messy repairs and oversized cutouts for good!
